It was a gorgeous show and effectively had me crying every 22 minutes like clockwork. At the time I was blown away by it. But I wouldn't call it one of my favourites, I only remember the same things you mention. I think because it was mostly such tear-bait without much actual nuanced writing or characterization.
It’s a coming-of-age, post-war guilt and grief, what-it-means-to-be-human story. Watch the first episode. It will give you a good idea of what you’re in for. I promise, you’ll have a tough time finding a more wholesome, beautiful experience than watching Violet Evergarden. 2.
Violet realizes that she was someone else during the war and she has come a long way from being a ruthless killer. But even then, somewhere deep down, she still struggles to accept Gilbert’s death. The events that follow take her down to more of a depressing route where she even tries to kill herself.
The era of violet evergarden. In the anime, they mention the war was 4 years long implying it could be the great war. But due to the combat scenes the dagger violet used looks french. But the uniforms she wore looked more German. Whilst her rifle resembled a french Lebel rifle.
